ELEPHANT & CASTLE, LONDON
A multidisciplinary cultural and sporting space occupying a restored 19th-century bathhouse and former swimming pool complex in south London.

CURATORIAL APPROACH
A reimagining of the classical Goddess of Nike for a contemporary cultural context. Zachary Eastwood-Bloom was selected for his ability to combine references to classical sculpture with digital fabrication and contemporary material processes.

Conceived in dialogue with the building’s history, the resulting work balances the poise and permanence of traditional bronze sculpture with an intentionally futuristic material language. Positioned as a custodian of the space, Goddess connects the architecture’s past with its new cultural identity.

CURATORIAL APPROACH

Pauline Loctin’s Flying in Nuanced Colours brings colour, lightness and a sense of flight to Uncommon Holborn. Combining the precision of origami with expressive sculptural forms, the installation unfolds across the glass-fronted entrance and into the atrium.

Made from G.F Smith paper in chartreuse and hot pink, its folded, birdlike forms appear to hover above the planting below. The vivid colours offer a playful counterpoint to the greenery, while the shifting folds invite visitors to experience the work from different viewpoints.

Launched for London Design Festival 2024, the commission transforms an everyday material into an expansive gesture, drawing the eye upwards and opening a moment of imagination within the working day.
