WHITECHAPEL, LONDON

Designed by AHMM, The Rowe is a 165,500 sq ft creative office development in the heart of Whitechapel, featuring an 8,000 sq ft roof garden and private terraces on every floor.

Curatorial Approach
T
he scale of The Rowe’s atrium presented an opportunity to think beyond the wall and create an artwork that could inhabit the architecture itself. We envisioned an ambitious, immersive commission that would become an integral part of the spatial experience while reflecting the cultural identity of its East London setting.

Situated in the heart of Whitechapel, opposite the Whitechapel Gallery, the location called for an artist able to work at architectural scale while bringing narrative and a strong sense of place to the commission. London-based Paul Cocksedge was selected for his distinctive approach to large-scale installation and his ability to translate cultural histories into compelling spatial experiences.

Drawing on East London’s rich legacy of garment making and textile production, Loop reimagines the movement and drape of fabric as a monumental suspended sculpture. Flowing through the atrium with an unexpected visual lightness, the work creates a dialogue between material, movement and place, celebrating Whitechapel’s creative heritage through a distinctly contemporary lens.
